The Ultimate Packing List

With less than 100 days until Christmas, it’s that time of year where you may be getting ready to pack up the family for a summer holiday or Christmas road trip.

Packing the car with food, kids, dogs, and outdoor gear, there’s so many little things that can be forgotten or missed.

We’ve come up with an essential list of items you can keep in your car all the time so you are prepared for anything. Once you’ve got this list ticked off you can enjoy your holiday!

License and registration: Obvious. Do NOT leave home without them.

A copy of your car insurance policy and the relevant contact numbers: Hopefully you won’t need to use your insurance but keep a copy in the car just in case.

Your car’s manual: Essential! Your car manual should live in the car.

Spare tire: and check the one you have is in good condition and appropriate air PSI before you set off.

Roadside Emergency Kit: This car emergency kit contains Jumper Cables, 2 Light Sticks, Reflective Vest, Emergency Rain Poncho, Warning triangle, whistle, Tire Pressure Gauge, Window Breaker etc. This all-in-one kit has you covered for any possible eventuality.

Paper maps/Maps.Me App: Paper Maps – because there isn’t cell service everywhere (if there was you could easily rely on Google Maps). is a free app allows you to download detailed maps which can be used offline and without cell service and acts as GPS.

Spare money: Coin purses in cars are still fashionable.

First Aid Kit: Basic supplies such a band-aids, bandages, antiseptic and safety pins can be invaluable when the closest town is 100km away!

Torch: In case the car battery dies in the dead of the night. Buy two. It means you’ll have a spare.

Bug Spray: Because bugs in the car are not fun and essential on a summer road trip.

Large Water Bottles: If you get stranded, staying hydrated is crucial. Keep a couple of large bottles in the car in case of emergencies. And on warm days on a summer road trip. Also keep a spare 2L-5L bottle of filtered water in case you need to top the water in your engine.

Toilet Roll: Don’t get caught short in an un-stocked rest stop! Or if you’re going bush, take the dunny roll and go ‘pick some flowers’ behind a tree.

Sick Bags: Travelling with young kids well car sickness is an option. Plus, you never know when you may get tummy bug or food poisoning

Plastic/Garbage Bags: Because you don’t want you car to resemble a rubbish bin. Plastic bags (or garbage bags) are also good to keep wet clothes away from dry ones if you get caught in the rain.

Hand sanitiser: Many people carry this with them now because of COVID. But don’t forgot before stopping for lunch or after you use public toilets.

Sunglasses: Driver or Passenger, nobody likes squinting into the afternoon or early morning sun.

Blanket: For cosying up during a daytime nap, using as a picnic blanket or for extra warmth should you get stranded somewhere after the sun goes down.

Travel Pillow: On the basis of the above. Comfortable people = Happy people

Travel Mug: Great for hot and cold drinks, and with a seal-able lid, with a travel mug there is less chance of an unnecessary spillage.

Painkiller/Anti-Inflammatory Medication: Being in the car with a headache and/or muscle strain/injury is neither fun nor comfortable.

Reusable Shopping Bag: For popping to the shop whilst on the road – avoid using unnecessary plastic bags and pack a reusable one. They fold up small and can be thrown in your handbag after your road trip for everyday use.

A Spare Towel: Spilled liquids, wet dog, sick child, caught in a storm, etc.

Thongs or Crocs: The perfect slip on shoe.
